about

Maria Faust’s Mass of Mary (2020) combines musical influences of medieval music, jazz, and sonoristic contemporary music, as well as those of older Estonian folk music. In itself, it is characteristic of today’s postmodern sense of art – creating something new by rethinking older, time-tested values of an artistic medium and manifesting them in a contemporary context. This is what the transcendent connection between today’s soundscape and the music world of centuries ago sounds like.
Mass of Mary is dedicated to victims of domestic violence, and the composer has used both liturgical Mass text as well as the esteemed playwright Eero Epner’s compilation of samples from texts by Karl Ristikivi and other poets. In certain instances, this gives the traditional Mass text (Mother, Child, Holy Spirit, and Finale) additional intimate emotional weight, concerning the fragility of familial relationships in cases of victims of domestic violence.
The sound language of Mass of Mary is relatively experimental in that musical stylistic references alternate quite quickly. Thus, bright and gentle musical motifs in the female voices of the choir can immediately switch to the jazz-like thematic development in the instrumental ensemble (Glo- ria), and the laconicity, similar to the motifs of the Middle Ages, can be transformed into the artistic „barking” of the male voices of the choir and mellow whispers of the female voices (Sanctus/ Benedictus).
The choir and the instrumental ensemble have different roles within the greater framework of Mass of Mary – while the center of gravity is mainly borne by the choir, the instrumentalists are left to carry an emphasis on dramatic accents, binding interludes, and offer a form of musical commentary. This allows the music to maintain an aural balance, both emotionally and compositionally.
Maria Faust (1979) is one of Estonia’s most internationally recognized jazz artists and composers. Her work is distinctive and her sonic language is recognized for its bold experimentation with non-traditional jazz elements, as well as a fascination and willingness to work with and in larger musical forms, especially in recent years.
Faust studied piano, singing, and saxophone at the Kuressaare Music School from 1986 to 1997, and continued her musical studies at the Georg Ots Tallinn Music College from 1997 to 2001. She then studied orchestral conducting at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre for one year, after which she went to the Danish National Academy of Music to study alto saxophone and jazz. Faust received her Master’s degree there in 2008 and in 2016 she graduated from Copenhagen’s Rhythmic Music Conservatory with an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in composition. She has been a conductor of the Copenhagen Estonian Choir and in addition to her concert and performance activities, she teaches composition and improvisation at the above-mentioned Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen.
Maria Faust has been recognized with numerous awards both in Estonia and Denmark, including being named the 2016 Estonian Jazz Musician of the Year and the 2019 Estonian Jazz Composer of the Year. In Denmark, she has won five Danish Music Awards (two in 2014, two in 2017, and one in 2020), as well as being the recipient of the prestigious Hæderspris (2019) given out by the Danish Composers and Songwriters Association. Most recently, in 2021, she received the Estonian Music Award for Jazz Album of the Year for her album ORGAN.
Estonian chamber choir Collegium Musicale (CM) was founded by con-
ductor Endrik Üksvärav in 2010. Its repertoire extends from Renaissance
to contemporary music with a special focus on Estonian composers: Arvo
Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Erkki-Sven Tüür, and others.
As ambassadors of Estonian culture, the choir’s mission is to bring high-
level musical and emotional experiences to audiences. The choir has col-
laborated with various other orchestras and ensembles, including Hel-
sinki Baroque Orchestra,Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, Glasperlenspiel Sinfonietta, Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, Tallinn Baroque Orchestra, Jeru- salem Symphony Orchestra, and others.
CM has sung under the baton of Andres Mustonen, Tõnu Kaljuste, Kaspars Putniņš, Simon Carrington, Jos van Veldhoven, Gianluca Marciano, and many more. The choir has toured in Italy, France, Finland, Germany, Japan, Israel, Canada, and elsewhere around the world.
CM has been named Choir of the Year three times by the Estonian Choral Association. In 2018, CM and conductor Endrik Üksvärav won the Music Award of Estonian Cultural Endowment for their promotion of Estonian choral music.
